Undertone

Your undertone is the natural colour beneath your skin's surface. The undertone is not the same as skin colour — it's the hue within your skin colour. There are three types of undertones: cool, neutral and warm. Even if you have the same skin colour as someone else, your undertones can be different. Skin colour can change due to various influences like the sun, but the undertone always stays the same. When you know your undertone, choosing make-up that suits you becomes easier. To filter our products by undertone, use the product filter on the left of the screen.

Undertones can be split into 3 categories:

Cool: bluish, red and/or pink undertone of the skin • Neutral: a mix of both warm and cool undertones • Warm: gold, peach and/or yellow undertone of the skin

Why do you need to know your undertone?

• To create the most natural look possible, it's important to know your undertone. With the right undertone, choosing a foundation or concealer that matches your skin — and looks natural — becomes easier. • To avoid harsh, unnatural-looking lines on your face. • To choose the best foundation shade.

How do you determine your undertone?

• You know your own skin best. How your skin reacts to sun says a lot about your undertone. Do you burn quickly, does your skin go pink or red? You probably have a cool undertone. If your skin tans brown, peach, gold, caramel or olive, you probably have a warm undertone. If your skin sometimes burns and sometimes tans, chances are you have a neutral undertone. • Another way is with a white object like a sheet of paper. Find a spot with natural, bright light and hold the sheet next to your face. Does your skin look pink? You probably have a cool undertone. Does it look yellowish? You probably have a warm undertone. If you can't see a clear undertone, you probably have a neutral one. • Jewellery can also help. Do you find gold suits you better than silver? Then you probably have a warm undertone. Do you prefer silver jewellery? A cool undertone is more likely. This method is less objective because the choice can be influenced by personal taste. • Although there are plenty of exceptions, eye colour and hair colour often hint at the undertone. In general, people with lighter hair and eyes have a cool or neutral undertone, and people with darker hair and eyes have a warm undertone.
